A $2.5 million settlement has been reached with the family of a mentally ill man that passed away in prison, according to the Huffington Post. 54-year-old Michael Anthony Kerr was held in solitary confinement for 35 days before he died of thirst in March of 2014. He was transported from a correctional facility to a mental hospital within a prison at the time of his death. An autopsy revealed that Kerr, who was serving a 31-year sentence for firing a gun nine times in a home in 2008, died of dehydration and was not receiving treatment for schizophrenia at the time.
