The hospital involved in treating Eric Garner will pay his family $1 million, according to Buzzfeed News. This settlement is in addition to the $5.9 million settlement New York City agreed to pay after Garner’s July death. Garner was placed in a chokehold by a New York police officer after the officer attempted to place him under arrest for selling untaxed cigarettes. Richmond University Medical Center sent paramedics to treat Garner, whose last moments were caught on video, including his last words, “I can’t breathe.” The medical examiner determined Garner’s cause of death to be homicide.
