Five Texans were awarded $502 million by a federal jury for the injuries they suffered as a result of defective hip implant devices, according to the Dallas Morning News. The award consisted of $142 million in actual damages and $360 in punitive damages to the plaintiffs. The lawyers of the plaintiffs argued that the manufacturers knew the devices were flawed but failed to warn consumers, and the parent company, Johnson & Johnson, helped cover up the danger of the products, which include severe pain and inflammation, bone erosion, and tissue loss. 8,900 cases are still pending against the companies, which have been consolidated, but the device has yet to be recalled.
