A security gate came down outside a Philadelphia storefront Saturday afternoon during a fundraiser, killing a three-year-old girl, according to NBC News. The little girl was standing outside Rita’s Water Ice at about 4 p.m. when the gate collapsed on her; she was taken to a local hospital, where she pronounced dead at 5:02 p.m. Officials will now conduct an investigation, in hopes of determining what caused the accident. Neighbors of the store claim the security gate has had issues for some time, though there is no open complaint against it. Philadelphia’s property codes indicate that the property owner is responsible for the maintenance and care of roll-down security gates.
