Toyota agreed to pay $1.2 billion last month, the largest penalty handed down for an auto company, following a four-year criminal investigation by the federal government, according to AP News. Toyota, who began a limited recall of their vehicles in 2009 for an acceleration issue, admitted that it withheld information and misled consumers. Toyota has also faced numerous civil suits because of the acceleration problems in their cars; an Oklahoma jury awarded $3 million to the victims of a crash involving a 2005 Camry. Toyota’s shares of American vehicle market have fallen more than four percent since these issues came to light.
