Independence day has come and gone, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reported that game wardens came into contact with 30,000 boats over the holiday weekend. Operating recreational boats while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is the leading contributing factor in boating deaths, according to NBC DFW. As a result of their patrol, 58 boaters were arrested for operating under the influence. In addition, 39 people were cited for underage drinking and eight for drug-related offenses. The department’s efforts seem to be working: they reported that since 2009, alcohol-related boating deaths have dropped by 37 percent.
