Over a dozen middle school students and members of the school’s staff were treated for exposure to tear gas on Thursday, according to NBC DFW. The school is located within the Raymondville Independent School District, which is about 50 miles northeast of Brownsville, about a mile away from the jail. The students and staff members began complaining of itchy eyes and an upset stomach after the jail released a non-lethal riot gas during a training activity. Fifteen students, three coaches, and one principal were among those affected; the school kept the remainder of the students inside for the day. Officials with the jail are investigating the incident.
