Following the death of 28-year-old Akai Gurley, a New York City police officer has been indicted for his death, according to the Huffington Post. Gurley died on November 20th during a patrol in Gurley’s building by two first-year police officers. The building’s lights were out in the stairwell, and officer Peter Liang’s gun fired into Gurley’s chest after he and his girlfriend entered the stairwell. Gurley was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital. Liang, whom ignored his commanding officer and an emergency operator for over six minutes after the shooting while texting his union representative, is being charged with officer misconduct, assault, manslaughter, and criminally negligent homicide.
