In 2011, Florida Governor Rick Scott offered Corizon Health, the country’s largest prison health care provider, a $1.2 billion contract despite the company being sued 660 times for malpractice, according to the Huffington Post. An investigation by The Palm Beach Post suggests that as a result, prisoners are suffering, and even dying. Three months after Corizon took over, the number of inmate deaths rose to a 10-year record high. In the past ten years, there have been 10 months in which 30 or more inmates died, but this year, there have been four months that 30+ deaths have occurred. Three unions filed lawsuits in 2012 to prevent Corizon from taking over, and their contract was blocked, but six months later, an appellate court reversed that decision, putting Corizon back in charge.
