Huffington Post Online posted an article outlining the 10 most horrific facts about flying and aviation accidents last month. The piece mentions a study in which 43-54% of pilots for passenger planes in the U.K., Norway, and Sweden admitted to falling asleep while working. Another study reported that airlines are flying with below standard fuel levels and instructing pilots to fly at a slower speed in order to save on fuel. Add in the following statistics, and you’ve got a frightening eye-opener; 80% of aviation accidents occur within the first three minutes of take-off and the last eight minutes before landing, and if you’re seated further than five rows away from an exit, your odds of successfully evacuating are greatly reduced. The article also offers safety tips in case of an aviation accident, but in comparison to auto accidents, they are rare. However, they do happen, and often result in serious injuries or death.
